Introducing Madroña Academy of the Arts and Sciences
The Conejo Valley Unified School District is proud to announce the transformation of Madroña Elementary School to Madroña Academy of the Arts and Sciences, where exploration meets excellence! The CVUSD’s newest academy provides cross-curricular connections for students through the arts and sciences, while building hands-on learning capacity and the skills to support future professions in the arts and sciences.
The vision of Madroña Academy is to foster curiosity and inspire young minds. This is accomplished, in part, through innovative and dynamic learning spaces. The campus is now the proud home of a beautiful new science lab, an engineering lab with 3D printers, an adaptive dance studio, garden area and curriculum aligned art instruction across multiple disciplines, including: Music and Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Digital Arts. The newly developed Madroña Academy of the Arts and Sciences Advisory Board will serve to guide and support the program development as this academy continues to enrich learning opportunities for its Mustang scholars.
Madroña has cultivated distinct partnerships with local leaders in the fields of arts and sciences, such as: TOArts, Loyola Marymount and California State University, Channel Islands. These partnerships contribute to the academy’s student-centered learning environments through guidance, consultation, collaboration, and financial support to help enhance and enrich programs.
The school’s unique, first of its kind, partnership with TOArts provides professional development for Madroña teachers and staff members with Express Arts curriculum, a pilot program for academic instruction through performance and active engagement. Madroña’s visual arts specialist actively plans lessons that encompass the recognition of art around the world; students learn about the artists, their art, and apply those same principles of design in their individual art explorations. Experiential learning is a fabric of the school. Beyond science learning opportunities that take students out of the classroom and into the field, teachers participate in collaborative planning with the Science Program Academic Specialist. With guidance from the school’s Science Program Academic Specialist, scholars participate in hands-on learning in the campus’s innovative engineering lab and physical science lab. This supports all TK-5 scholars’ engagement in content-aligned science and art lessons with cross-curricular connections that empower knowledge focused on the Arts and Sciences.
“We are thrilled to provide our scholars with a learning environment where creativity and scientific inquiry thrive hand in hand,” said Gina Mandell, Principal of Madroña Academy. “We cannot wait to see the incredible achievements our students will accomplish in our classrooms and in the community as they continue to grow and gain unique skill sets in the fields of arts and sciences.”
The 2024-2025 school year marks the 60th anniversary of Madroña’s rich history and long-standing commitment to education, including its transformation into an arts and sciences academy, which signifies a new chapter that honors the school’s legacy while forging a path towards innovative learning.
