CVUSD Slam Dunks into March Madness with the Return of Unified Basketball Games!
On Friday, March 1st, in front of packed bleachers, Newbury Park High School hosted Westlake High School for the first of three Unified Basketball Games that will take place this month. Up next, Westlake High School will host Thousand Oaks High School on Friday, March 22nd at 10:25am. The final match-up will be on Thursday, March 28th at Thousand Oaks High School, as the Lancers face off against the Newbury Park High School Panthers at 10:40am.
Since 2018, our Unified Sports teams from Thousand Oaks High, Newbury Park High and Westlake High have been meeting at center court for the annual Unified Basketball Games.
All three of our CVUSD comprehensive high schools are Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools, which is centered on inclusion, engagement and fun as our Unified Sports program joins Athletes, students with disabilities, and Unified Partners, neurotypical peers, together on the same team. The Unified Teams are comprised of approximately half Athletes, and half Unified Partners.
Each school has developed a unique model of stewardship for their Unified Sports Leagues with Special Education teachers, Adapted Physical Education teachers, and a variety of staff members, lending support to the teams.
This past fall the three high schools participated in Unified Bocce Games and this spring they will participate in Unified Soccer Games, as part of their three league tournament.
A big thank you to all of our dedicated staff members who work tirelessly to make this program a success. The CVUSD is so proud of our Athletes, Unified Partners and school communities for their support of this invaluable program!
