National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated nationwide from September 15 to October 15 to honor the contributions that Hispanic, Latino, and Latinx Americans have made to our nation and society. Resolution #23/24-01 in support of National Hispanic Heritage Month was approved at the Wednesday, August 16, 2023 Board of Education meeting.
National Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week-long observance in 1968, expanded to a month-long observance in 1988 and was enacted into law that same year on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
September 15 was chosen as the starting date for this important celebration because it is the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries, including El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras. This month also celebrates the independence days of Mexico on September 16th and Chile on September 18th.
Hispanic, Latino, and Latinx Americans have been integral to the prosperity, power, and progress of the United States, with their significant contributions to the economic, political, and social growth of our nation.
The Conejo Valley Unified School District Board of Education encourages educators, students, and families to celebrate this year's National Hispanic Heritage Month's theme, "Latinos Driving Prosperity, Power and Progress in America," by educating students on the culture (literature, art, music, dance), languages, traditions, cuisine, and positive contributions Hispanic, Latino and Latinx Americans have made in our country, district, and community.
