Congratulations Coach Sammi Stewart: SHAPE 2023 National Teacher of the Year for Adapted Physical Education

We are proud to share that Sammi Stewart, Adapted Physical Education Specialist for the CVUSD, has been selected as SHAPE’s 2023 National Teacher of the Year for Adapted Physical Education!   

This prestigious national recognition comes from SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Educators),  the nation’s largest membership organization of health and physical education teachers, which envisions a world where all children are prepared to lead healthy and physically active lives.

Coach Sammi currently serves as an APE Specialist at Newbury Park High School, Sycamore Canyon School, Banyan Elementary School and Conejo Elementary School where her high-octane energy and dedication to making a difference in the lives of the students she serves is unmatched.

She has made invaluable contributions to CVUSD students throughout her six year tenure with the District - including playing a pivotal role in achieving Unified Champion School statuses and bringing Unified Sports Tournaments to our CVUSD comprehensive high schools. She was selected to receive this national recognition through a rigorous application and interview process where she showcased being exemplary in the following five award criteria areas: 

1. Models the comprehensive roles and responsibilities necessary to implement adapted physical education services that align to the Essential Components for Physical Education as reflected in the SHAPE America National Standards and GradeLevel Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education as it best meets individualize needs indicated in the Individualized Education Program and 504 plans.

2. Purposely plans and successfully implements universal design for learning principles into daily lessons by differentiating instruction based on the diverse abilities of every student in each physical education class.

3. Participates in a leadership/collaborative role that fosters an active healthy lifestyle beyond the physical education classroom (such as, but not limited to coaching, volunteering, developing programs and special events, and/or collaborating with families).

4. Administers multi-confirming assessments and utilizes the data to develop and implement student Individualized Education Programs and 504 plans to guide instructional planning and decisions.

5. Advocates for the profession, participates in professional development opportunities (such as, but not limited to: service through leadership, presentations, and/or writing).

Coach Sammi was surprised with the National Teacher of the Year for Adapted Physical Education award at the SHAPE America National Convention & Expo’s Hall of Fame Banquet earlier this month.
