CVUSD High School Students Participate in “Bite of Reality” Financial Literacy Program
On Thursday, February 6th, more than 150 CVUSD high school students completed a financial literacy program Bite of Reality® at a special event hosted by Logix Federal Credit Union.
Students from the ETHOS – Entrepreneurship Academy at Thousand Oaks High School, and DATA – Technology Academy at Newbury Park High, as well as students from Westlake High School and Conejo Valley High School participated in the event. They spent the morning learning about how to carefully spend and budget in the future. Bite of Reality is an exercise that simulates a real-life experience, by way of an app, complete with financial decisions, bills, and even credit scores.
Hosted at California Lutheran University’s Soiland Arena, Logix employee volunteers, along with community member volunteers from the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce, Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce and Moorpark College and Many Mansions assisted students during their “shopping” experience. Students had to carefully budget, as they visited eight stations where they shopped for household items, groceries, transportation, housing and more. When the app sent an alert that a bill payment was due, or if they overspent, students visited the credit union. There, they learned how they could continue – perhaps by returning an item or limiting spending. Teachers, teens and volunteers alike enjoyed the experience.
“Financial literacy is important for everyone, especially high school students,” said Carlos Alvarado, Logix branch manager in Newbury Park. “This exercise allows them to think about money matters and develop skills to make good choices.”
Logix staff organized the event in partnership with Jersey Mike’s and Oaks Event Rentals, and inaugural sponsor Cal Lutheran.
“We are proud to host this event for our valued partners Logix Federal Credit Union and Conejo Valley Unified School District. Managing life’s limited resources, especially time and money, is at the core of the stewardship we are called to build and support in others,” Cal Lutheran’s President John Nunes.
The CVUSD is thankful for our caring community partners that go above and beyond to support our students and school communities!
