  • Grade 1:

    Reading and Fluency Practice - Students will be practicing finding sight words and word families in the text.  We will begin looking for vocabulary words to help answer questions about the text.  Students will focus on reading as a group, as well as individually.

    Reading, Writing, Math reinforcement – Students will use Treasures & Step Up to Writing materials, to practice reading and writing skills.  They will work on decoding words, sorting words, reviewing high frequency words, building decoding and fluency skills with phonics & skill based readers, working on spelling by building words, building good sentences with proper punctuation and capitalization and writing a group story.  Math reinforcement- students will practice fact fluency & problem solving/story problems from Read It!  Draw It! Solve It!

    Reading A-Z -Students will improve their fluency by practicing decoding skills, phonics, and repeated reading utilizing the Reading A-Z program.  

    Reading Reinforcement-Students will have fun playing games to reinforce their short vowel, long vowel, and blend words. They will read short high-interest stories to help with vocabulary and comprehension development.    

    STEM- STEM activities will be incorporated into the fairy tales students will learn about. While they are reading the fairy tales they will work collaboratively to solve various problems presented in the stories.  

    Grade 2:

    Reading Fluency- Students will use I-pads and the Read Naturally Live application. This app combines several research-based strategies in order to improve reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Students will monitor and record their overall reading fluency over the six week session.  

    Reading Basics of decoding, blending, and phonics skills- Students will be working on decoding and blending and basic phonics skills and heading to reading more fluently near the end of the 6weeks.

    Reading Comprehension-Students will use the web based computer program, Reading Plus.  Reading plus is supported by eight decades of research.  This program combines three domains of reading: cognitive, physical and emotional.  The cognitive aspect supports the development of vocabulary and comprehension.  The physical aspect supports silent reading fluency and stamina. Finally, the emotional aspect supports student interest and an increase in self-confidence and motivation.

    STEAM- Students will be exposed to STEAM using the following themes in science: anatomy and biology and the study of the bones, blood and the function of the heart.  Forensics and the study of fingerprints, chromatography and skills of observation and analysis.  Engineering towers and additional STEAM activities will also be incorporated into this session. 

    ELA Enrichment-Students will be exploring elements of creative writing and express their interests through story writing, letter writing, and group activities.

    Grade 3:

    Guided reading: Students will participate in a small group reading the story, Mr. Popper’s Penguins.  Students will practice reading comprehension skills through building vocabulary skills, study the literary elements such as character, plot, and setting, asking and answering questions. Students will also participate in both student and teacher led discussions.  In addition, students will practice summary writing skills as they read this delightful work of fiction.

    Grade 4:

    Marvelous Mathematicians- Students will participate in a small group to reinforce basic concepts such as multiplication facts through songs, computer games, and flash cards.   In addition, students will practice problem solving skills identifying key academic vocabulary words within word problems.

    Reading Fluency- Students will use I-pads and the Read Naturally Live application. This app combines several research-based strategies in order to improve reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Students will monitor and record their overall reading fluency over the six week session.

    Written Expression- Students will review, identify, and write complete sentences using proper sentence structure (fragments vs. complete thoughts, subjects and predicates). Next, students will review the basic structure of an organized paragraph. They will identify and practice writing topic, supporting detail, and concluding sentences to create their own organized paragraph using, Step Up To Writing. Finally, students will practice summary writing with short stories or articles. Students will have fun participating in matching games, creating crazy sentences, and reading interesting passages to summarize.

    Math Enrichment- Students will be focusing on STEAM projects such as using the Fibonacci sequence to create an art project and geometry string art.   

    Creative Writing- Students will learn the fundamentals of writing a newspaper article, conducting an interview, and publishing a newsletter.

    Grade 5:

    Math Reinforcement- Students will work on math procedures, problem solving, and communicative reasoning. We will begin by reviewing place value. Students will be given the tools to understand, explain, and solve Step-by-Step addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division word problems. Students also will enjoy playing games to practice their multiplication and division facts.

    Literature Circles-Students will participate in discussions about literature pieces while also practicing making inferences and connections to the text.

    Project Based Learning & Planning for a Feast- Students will dive into a project based learning experience using writing, reading, and math by planning for a holiday dinner.  Students will be tasked to develop a real or imagined experiences using key details of a good dinner.  In addition, students will apply learning of fractions, decimals and budgeting.  Finally, students will be asked to utilize effective writing strategies, descriptive details, and clear event sequences as they write to explain their ideas for a successful dinner.

    Coding & Technology- Students will explore the world of coding through the use of engaging board games such as Robot Turtle Code and Monkey Island to teach concepts of coding. Students will also use Ozobot & Dash robots.
