The Academy for Civic Engagement (“ACE”) will supplement and enhance existing CVUSD English and History Social Science Courses of Study by providing sixth-grade students with rich, meaningful opportunities designed to increase civic engagement: participating in healthy, respectful, and reasoned civil discourse, including academic and peer-critical discussions, public speaking, constructive listening, and debate; participating in student directed service-learning projects that tie the study of ELA academic objectives to community service; and actively taking part in thought-provoking role plays and simulations to research and explore current issues and democratic processes. To accomplish these objectives, students will learn to read text critically and analytically; research engaging and relevant topics; substantiate opinions, rationales, and thoughts with evidence; communicate effectively to an audience; and listen respectfully to alternative viewpoints. The course will seek to provide an atmosphere of security, reassurance, and acceptance so that students can freely generate ideas, learn from other perspectives, and cultivate understanding, tolerance, communication skills, and strategies that will enhance the knowledge, skills, and motivation to engage students in the life of their communities. Advanced Digital Video Production (AdDVP) is the capstone course in the Arts Media & Entertainment pathway. Through this course, students gain mastery of the emerging skills learned in the Mass Media (participant) and Digital Video Production (concentrator) pathway courses. In AdDVP students will study live production, technical broadcasting, ethical broadcasting, the social impacts of media, as well as current local and global topics. Students will complete weekly writing assignments that correlate with these areas of study to ensure academic rigor. The curriculum will provide the opportunity for interdisciplinary awareness, as students will incorporate elements of English and social science into their videography and broadcast journalism projects.

During the year, students will become familiar with the various interactions between the abiotic and biotic factors in an ocean ecosystem. This course will instruct in-depth research practices in preparation for Mock Trial Competition. The students will develop knowledge in defense and prosecution tactics for courtroom cases including procedure, trial protocol, constitutional and amendment laws, judicial system procedures, and case law. Communication and analytical skills for use in preparation for actual competition trial topics will be taught by using attorney coach speakers, small group discussion, problem solving, and role-playing techniques. Mastering of state content standards will be assessed through performance-based instruction.

OASIS is an intense intervention program designed and administered for those students (freshman, sophomores, and juniors) who are most “at-risk” for not graduating as reflected in poor grade point average and being identified as “off target”, having earned insufficient credits needed for graduation. These students are placed in a class which deals with academic skills development and consistent support aided by junior and senior academic mentors.

Overview: AP Research allows students to explore an academic topic, problem, issue, or idea of individual interest in science, technology, engineering and math in depth. Students choose a topic of interest and come up with a research question in the beginning of the year. They also design, lan, and implement a yearlong investigation to answer their research question. Through this inquiry, they further the skills they acquired in the AP Seminar course by learning research methodology, employing ethical research practices, scientific writing, and accessing, analyzing, and ynthesizing information.
