At Walnut Elementary, staff, students, and families work in partnership to foster an inclusive environment where all students grow academically, artistically, and socially. Walnut's devoted staff members share a common philosophy of excellence in instruction and the belief that the elementary experience sets the foundation for a lifetime of learning.

Walnut uses much of its Title 1 grant to hire additional credentialed teachers to support both academic intervention and enrichment. Students participate in focused, small group instruction each day during Target Time to target just what they need to grow, whether that is extra academic support, additional practice, or enrichment. Walnut also invests in the arts and digital technology for a well-rounded educational experience. Along with regular music, art, PE, and dance/movement instruction, all of our students participate in a grade-level musical each year that reinforces concepts they are studying in class.

Our Create Club recess option allows students' imaginations to run free as they experiment with a variety of materials (mostly recycled items) to make their own creations. The counseling and social-emotional team operates the Peace Room, where students can come to find peace within themself or in their relationships at school.

Walnut is a Certified Kindness School, which fits well with our motto: "Walnut: Where Everyone Belongs!"

The students are also a part of building our community through social and emotional lessons where they learn to have empathy and respect for eachother. Throughout the year, students receive an extensive specialist schedule and have a variety of opportunities available to them including:

    • Enrichment – Our MAGIC (Meeting Academic Goals In Curriculum) Time provides intervention and enrichment for all students in English Language Arts. Every student receives instruction at their level with curricular focuses in phonics skills, fluency, comprehension, text analysis, and research and inquiry. Each teacher will also often provide other types of enrichment opportunities to meet our students' needs. They often focus around not only researching something that they are passionate about but also presenting and teaching to their peers.
    • Leadership – We provide students with leadership opportunities through our Student Council program. Our student council representatives lead the school in our Student of the Month assemblies, participate in PFA activities, and help be positive role models for all of our students.
    • Arts – All our students receive music and art through their specialist schedule, Students also have the opportunity to participate in the Band and Strings program during the school day and our Chorus program after school.
    • Technology – Our Makerspace Room is a space for students to grow in creativity, collaboration, and problem solving through STEAM technologies including robotics, crafting, coding, video and movie making technology, 3D printing, and engineering. Through innovative and engaging educational practices, we aim to inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. iPads and Chromebooks are available to all students with one-to-one implementation in all grades. Our younger wizards use ipads while our 2nd-5th graders are comfortable with chromebooks. Our 1st graders are able to learn how to navigate both the ipad and chromebook.

The Westlake Elementary parent community sets us apart, as they support our school in every way. This helps us to provide an amazing school experience for all students. Our dedicated staff, supportive parents, and engaged community work together to ensure that each child reaches their fullest potential and develops the skills and confidence to succeed in an ever-changing world.
