CVUSD Honors National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month & Disability History Month this March

The Conejo Valley Unified School District honors National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (NDDAM) and Disability History Month this March. This is a time to recognize the contributions and achievements of people with disabilities, celebrate the Disability Rights Movement, honor the legacy of its leaders, and raise awareness about disability rights and issues.

Every March, the National Association of Councils in Developmental Disabilities and its partners work together to create a campaign to highlight the many ways in which people with and without disabilities come together to form strong and diverse communities. This campaign seeks to emphasize that community, accessibility, and opportunities for people with developmental disabilities should be recognized and championed every day. 

This month reminds us that individuals with developmental disabilities are valuable members of our community and deserve full participation in all aspects of life, including education, employment, recreation, and civic engagement. While March provides an opportunity for heightened awareness, true awareness happens when we commit to creating accessible environments and productive opportunities year-round. Recognizing disability history will enable students with disabilities to see themselves in history and history-makers and feel a greater sense of pride.

Learning about disability history enriches every student’s understanding of human rights, changes perceptions of harmful stereotypes, fosters empathy and self-awareness, and empowers all students to recognize and stand against ableism. Disability History Month serves as a reminder that every student has the right to be respected, valued, and provided with opportunities to succeed, and challenges us all to work together to prevent discrimination and bullying, ensuring that students with disabilities can thrive in school.

CVUSD also honors Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, Neurodiversity Celebration Week, and World Down Syndrome Day throughout the month of March.

At the March 4, 2026 Board of Education Meeting, Annual Resolution #25/26-25 In Support of National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (NDDAM) and Disability History Month was approved. CVUSD is committed to meeting the educational needs of all students in our schools and encourages our schools to reflect on the impact of artists, innovators, and leaders in the disability community, celebrate student achievements, advocate for their rights, and promote understanding and inclusivity with the goal of creating a more inclusive society.
