CVUSD Celebrates Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is observed annually in the United States during November to raise awareness of our nation's original inhabitants and descendants' culture, traditions, and achievements.

Native American Heritage Month is an opportunity for the Conejo Valley Unified School District to honor the important contributions, achievements, and sacrifices Native Americans have made distinctive to Ventura County and across the state of California and the United States.

At the Wednesday, October 22, 2025 Board of Education Meeting, Resolution #25/26-11 in Support of Native American Heritage Month was approved. The proclamation celebrates the contributions of Native Americans and urges parents and students to learn more about the Native American culture both locally and throughout the United States.

The Resolution notes that the Chumash historically inhabited the central and southern coastal regions of California and that CVUSD is located on Indigenous land. Furthermore it states, “In recognizing the traditional custodians of the land, we pay respect for the Chumash people, the history and culture of the community, and all Native Americans as America’s First Peoples. We pay respect to the Chumash Elders past, present and future for they hold the memories, the traditions, and the culture of this area, which continues as a place of learning.”
