A “Bite of Reality:” CVUSD High School Students Participate In Financial Literacy Program with Community Partner Logix

On Tuesday, February 3rd, approximately 175 CVUSD high school students completed a financial literacy program Bite of Reality® at a special event hosted by Logix Federal Credit Union.

Students from four CVUSD high schools participated in the event, including 10th grade students in the ETHOS – Entrepreneurship Academy at Thousand Oaks High School, 10th grade students in the DATA – Technology Academy at Newbury Park High, as well as 9th grade students from the AVID Program at Westlake High School and a cross-section of students from Conejo Valley High School. They spent the morning learning about how to carefully spend and budget in the future. 

Bite of Reality is an exercise that simulates a real-life experience, by way of an app, complete with financial decisions, bills, and even credit scores.

Hosted at California Lutheran University’s Soiland Arena, Logix employee volunteers, along with community member volunteers assisted students during their “shopping” experience. Students had to carefully budget, as they visited eight stations where they shopped for household items, groceries, transportation, housing and more. When the app sent an alert that a bill payment was due, or if they overspent, students visited the credit union. There, they learned how they could continue – perhaps by returning an item or limiting spending.
