The Ventura County Office of Education announced today that Conejo Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) teacher, Leah Oviedo, was chosen as the 2017 Ventura County Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Oviedo is a teacher at Walnut Elementary School in Newbury Park, and was surprised with the honor in her classroom by family, as well as various members of Ventura County Office of Education, Conejo Valley Unified School District, and Unified Association of Conejo Teachers.

The Teacher of the Year program is awarded by the Ventura County Office of Education (VCOE), which represents 20 school districts and 210 schools, with a total student enrollment of approximately 142,000.  The program’s goal is to recognize and honor exemplary and highly qualified teacher in Ventura County, and emphasize educational innovation, student learning, and the rewards of teaching.

The Board of Education (Board) of the Conejo Valley Unified School District initiated its process in May for selecting a new superintendent, beginning with a series of Special Board Meetings dedicated to this procedure, which were held on May 8th, 9th and 30th, 2017. 

As part of the district’s commitment to keeping their employees and the public informed on the progress of this process, we have set up a page on the district site that will be dedicated to the latest updates on the process of hiring both an Interim, as well as a new Permanent Superintendent.

Leah Oviedo receives special recognition from Chamber of Commerce, District

In a surprise celebration on Wednesday, May 31st, the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Conejo Valley Unified School District honored Leah Oviedo, a 5th grade teacher at Walnut Elementary, as their selection for Teacher of the Year for 2016-2017.

Leah has been a certificated teacher for CVUSD since 2008, and in that time, has taught at the Kindergarten, 3rd grade and 5th grade levels. She spent several years prior to that working for the district as a Child Care Assistant and a substitute teacher.  She was selected as Teacher of the Year because of her dedication to engaging and supporting all students in learning.  Leah illustrated that she is able to recognize the diverse needs of learners, exhibit high professional standards, and engage with families and the community.

The Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Conejo Valley Unified School District for the 2016-2017 school year to recognize outstanding educators with its Teacher of the Month recognition program. On Tuesday, May 23rd, Gia Jantz, and english teacher at Sycamore Canyon Elementary was named CVUSD’s May 2017 Teacher of the Month. On Wednesday, May 24th, Armita Mehrabi-Hashemi, a math teacher at Westlake High School, was honored as the June 2017 Teacher of the Month. 

CVUSD Board of Education Announces Steve Lepire as New Principal of Newbury Park High School

Steve Lepire has been announced as the next principal of Newbury Park High School (NPHS), beginning with the 2017-2018 school year. The official announcement was made at the district’s Board Meeting on Tuesday, May 2nd. This will be Mr. Lepire’s second position within Newbury Park High School’s administration, having served previously as their assistant principal from 2003 until 2008.
