Superintendent of Conejo Valley Unified School District Announces Resignation

Dr. Ann Bonitatibus to step down from role to pursue new personal, professional ventures

Superintendent Ann BonitatibusAt its April 4, 2017 meeting, the Board of Education for Conejo Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) accepted the resignation of superintendent, Dr. Ann Bonitatibus, as she is interested in pursuing new personal and career interests at the end of this school year.  She expressed gratitude to the students, teachers, administrators and staff for their exceptional commitment to students.  She also noted the outstanding wrap-around support that parents and the broader business community give to CVUSD schools.

Dr. Bonitatibus, the District’s first female superintendent, entered CVUSD in July 2015 with her Greenprint for Learning. Upon speaking with hundreds of stakeholders, she initiated several platforms in response to areas of pride and need.  Board Trustee Pat Phelps stated, “When the Board searched for a new superintendent, we hoped to find someone who would bring a fresh perspective to CVUSD, someone who could recognize and celebrate our strengths, but would also be willing to identify and tackle the areas where improvement was needed.  Dr. Bonitatibus met and exceeded those expectations.  Her integrity and her dedication to students have been an inspiration.”

Dr. Bonitatibus is proud of how CVUSD educators have engaged in significant culture shifts, “We have been expanding opportunities and access for all students, shifting from gate-keeping to door-opening practices.” Additionally, many in the CVUSD community expressed concern about stressors that impact students’ emotional and social wellbeing.  Outcomes have included additional counselors in elementary schools, hiring behavior health professionals, a superintendent’s book club, and a monthly parent workshop and education series sponsored by the Conejo Schools Foundation with CVUSD’s Breakthrough program.

Also, CVUSD enhanced and marketed its brand as a choice destination for education.  Many new digital platforms were created, from new websites and social media to livestreaming Board meetings and connecting with families via a mobile app.  Finally, Dr. Bonitatibus instituted a transparent multiyear budgeting process and master planning approaches for facilities and technology.  She spent extensive efforts educating the community on how the District could effectively prepare a balanced budget, enhance student programs, and reward employees with well-deserved raises, all while facing declining enrollment and increased costs for doing business.

Dr. Betsy Connolly who served as Board President when Dr. Bonitatibus was hired said, “The impact of her leadership will be felt into the future.  I am grateful for her dedication to students and families and for the wealth of experience she brought to us.”

The Board of Education will decide next steps on appointing a successor. They will work with Dr. Bonitatibus on transition plans as she concludes her work with the District through this June 2017.
