Two New Trustees Join the Board of Education for Conejo Valley Unified School District
Lauren Gill and Karen Sylvester were formally sworn in as trustees by Superintendent Dr. Mark McLaughlin and Board President Cindy Goldberg at a special ceremony prior to the start of the Tuesday, December 15th regularly scheduled Board Meeting.
The swearing in ceremony marks the start of the first elected terms of Mrs. Gill, Trustee Area 5, and Mrs. Sylvester, Trustee Area 1.
Mrs. Gill earned degrees in English and American Literature and in Religious Studies from Brown University. She’s worked in technology, started and runs a successful business and spent the majority of her career in educational publishing. Both of her children are graduates of CVUSD.
“My service as a trustee arises from a sense of gratitude for my own public school experience in upstate New York and for my children’s superb education here in CVUSD at Banyan Elementary, Sequoia Middle and Newbury Park High School,” Mrs. Gill said. “I am honored to work collaboratively with my fellow Board members, district leadership, teachers, staff, students, families, and engaged community members in continuing efforts to honor the promise of each individual student and to make our great district stronger and more equitable.”
Mrs. Sylvester graduated with an M.B.A. degree from Harvard Business School and a B.S. in Economics, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a retired business and management consultant. For the past 18 years, Mrs. Sylvester has served in various leadership positions for parent organizations in the CVUSD, including President of the Westlake High School PTSA, President of the Westlake Hills Elementary School PFA, and Executive Vice President of the Colina Middle School PTSA. She has also been a member of the District Advisory Council (DAC) for 9 years and was on the School Site Councils for Westlake Hills Elementary School and Westlake High School. All three of her children are graduates of CVUSD.
“I’m looking forward to collaborating with my fellow trustees and district administration to improve the outcomes and experiences of all students,” Mrs. Sylvester said. “I am so grateful for the opportunity to give back to my community by serving the district which successfully educated all three of my children.”
Regularly scheduled Board of Education Meetings for the Conejo Valley Unified School District are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month.
