Welcome to TK - Monday, August 25, 2014

August 27, 2014

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Transitional Kindergarten!  We hope each of you had a wonderful and relaxing summer.  We are looking forward to a terrific year working with your children.  It is so exciting to see the growth in the students during their first year of school!

We believe that communication is best when the parents are familiar with procedures.  Therefore, we have listed the Top Ten things that you need to know in order to have a smooth and successful year in Transitional Kindergarten.

1.     Homework – We will provide each child with a blue homework folder that needs to be brought back and forth to school every day.  This helps the students learn about responsibility.  Homework in transitional kindergarten mainly consists of a daily reading log.  These logs will be sent home on the first day of the week (usually Monday) and are due on the last day of the week (usually Friday).  Optional math activities will also be sent home on a monthly basis.  These may be returned for a gold star.  There will also be additional homework activities sent home throughout the year.

2.    Thursday/Friday Newsletter – Students will receive a newsletter every Thursday, where you will find important information about school news and upcoming events at Walnut.

3.    Supplies – We will provide each student with the following items: large crayons, pencils, and scissors.  A supply list was given out at Transitional Kindergarten Orientation of suggested donations.  These supplies will be used by our class throughout the school year.

4.    Absence Procedures – When your child is absent, please call the school in the morning (805) 498-3608 extension 300.  Transitional Kindergarten School Hours are from 8:25-1:30.

5.    What to bring to school – PLEASE LABEL ALL CLOTHING, BACKPACKS, and LUNCH BOXES.  In Transitional Kindergarten, students have a morning recess and a lunch recess.  Please provide your child with a healthy snack each day. Also, please help your child complete the lunch chart each morning.  Students are not to bring toys of any sort to school with the exception of sharings when appropriate.

6.    Birthdays– On your child’s birthday they will be given a birthday crown and made the “Lucky Duck” (special helper) for the day.  Please do not send edible treats to school on your child’s birthday.  It is fine to send non-edible treats such as stickers or pencils.

7.    Drop off and Pick up Procedures

Supervision is provided before school beginning at 7:50 a.m. Students should not be on campus before that time.  School begins at 8:25 am.  The warning bell rings at 8:23 am and the tardy bell rings at 8:25 am.  A child is considered “tardy” if he/she is not present as the class enters the room at 8:25 am.  All students arriving after the tardy bell must report to the office for a tardy slip. While you may find the beginning of the day to be emotional, please allow your child to come into the classroom alone as soon as the bell rings.

All families need to establish an after-school pick-up plan for their student(s). Students must leave campus immediately upon dismissal.  There is no supervision after school (except for those enrolled in special programs). Parents/siblings should wait for students at the designated gate until class is dismissed.

The teachers will need to make sure that all students are with their parents before we can begin talking to parents about individual concerns.  Please know that your children’s safety is our number one priority.

Students need to be dropped off prior to 8:25 a.m. at the kindergarten playground.  When the bell rings, there is a designated area on the white top where the students will line up.  School ends at 1:30 p.m. Students may be picked up at this time.

8.    Parent Conferences – Parent conferences will be scheduled in October.  If you would like to meet with us sooner, please send a note and we will arrange a convenient time.

9.    Volunteers – We welcome any and all volunteers in the classroom.  You can volunteer on a regular basis or just for special occasions (field trips, class parties, etc).  In order for the students to get adjusted to classroom routines and procedures, volunteers will not be in the classroom for the first few weeks of school.  If you are interested in volunteering, please complete and return the volunteer information sheet.

10.   Communication – We believe that communication is vital to ensure a successful year for your child.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at school at (805) 498-3608 extension 205 or via email at sroth@conejousd.org and kohara@conejousd.org.  Please make sure to send the email to both teachers.

We are looking forward to working and learning with you and your student!

Sincerely,

The Transitional Kindergarten Teachers
