Welcome to my website. I have been teaching for 28 years (25 in CVUSD and 24 at LCMS), and with each new year, my students continue to inspire me to evolve as a teacher and as a human being. As a graduate of the UCSB credential program in 1991, I have been trained by the South Coast Writing Project and have been prepared to think outside of the box when it comes to delivering instruction.
I am not a traditional teacher as I believe not all children learn in a traditional manner. I have crafted my ability to differentiate instruction over the past two decades for the benefit of all learners. Homework is preparatory in nature, allowing students to review and prepare their thoughts and ideas for the next day's Problem Based Collaboration or Socratic Seminar. Honors students will, of course, have more complex home tasks, often reflecting independent application of content and demonstration of understanding. My philosophy of teaching revolves around the idea that students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills are the cornerstones of their success and manifest themselves in a variety of ways, all of which should be respected and honed. With this in mind, I strive to create innovative tasks in the classroom, bringing both rigor and strategies to lessons.
In my not-so-spare-time, I work at CLU as adjunct faculty in their Teacher Preparation Program and am the liaison between CLU and LCMS. I feel compelled to aid future teachers to become the best they can be. Therefore, I usually have 1 to 2 Teacher Candidates each semester which greatly aids student learning and success as well as student access to small group and/or one-on-one instruction. I also make myself available to your students via email 7 days per week until 8pm.
On a personal note, I have been married for 26 years to an assistant principal who I originally met in the 4thgrade. Together, we have two amazing children: Paisley (22) and Spencer (18). I am inspired by my family, great books, and my profession. My favorite teacher treats are Starbuck’s mochas, dark chocolate and converting my classroom to a flexible seating space that meets the needs of the 21st century learner.
I look forward with great anticipation to meeting your children and guiding them to a path of educational success and an inspired approach to learning. Please feel free to email me any time if you'd like to chat about your child's progress.
