Here’s the latest news on what’s been happening in the Cypress library.
During the month of October students were introduced to several IB Inquire themed books. I introduced the concept of developing a natural curiosity to my young friends. TK through first grade students were read the story, Another, by Christian Robinson. The story asks readers such question as, “What if you discovered another world? Met another you? What might you do?” After the story was read, students were then given the opportunity to walk through a “portal” (A DIY project of my own doing) into an imaginary universe and tell what kind of world they would like to see.
The second through fifth graders were read the story, Izzy Gizmo, by Pip Jones. The story tells of an innovative, clever, girl and her dedication to a wounded bird. Izzy Gizmo’s inventions are marvelous but often malfunction. When she finds a crow with a broken wing, she has to help. Izzy tries again and again to build a new pair of wings, but nothing works. Izzy, through much trial and error, creates a prosthetic wing for her wounded friend. After reading the book, I presented a slideshow that included animals who have prosthetic limbs. Interviews with college students and professionals working in the field of prosthetics were shared with the students as well.
A good time was had by all!
