Principal's Message

May 22, 2015

Dear Conejo and OCLM Parents,

I am not sure where to begin this letter but to say, “Thank you.”  Thank you for allowing me to be the principal for your children for the last 7 years.  It has been an honor and a pleasure to be at Conejo Elementary and at OCLM.  We have accomplished so much as a community, learning and growing together.  We ourselves have become leaders as we have watched our students grow and change into the leaders they are today and will be in the future.  What a wonderful gift to have been given to be the principal at a school for 7 years, it is nearly unheard of in this day and age.  It is therefore very difficult for me to tell you that this will in fact be my last year at Conejo Elementary.  For the school year 2015-2016 I will become the principal at Lang Ranch Elementary.

Dr. Covey said, “There are three constants in life... change, choice and principles.”  We must face this change as we would want our children, our little leaders to do, with hope and with an open heart.  It is the principles we have learned together that will guide us through this change and give us the ability to see the future as full of possibilities.  I will miss each of you and your children and the wonderful impact that you all have had on me.  I am a lifelong learner who will seek to be a learner in my new environment, but I will take the lessons I have learned at Conejo with me as they have been the true fulfillment of my passion for education.

The district has not yet placed a new principal at Conejo but will begin the process of finding that perfect fit next week.  They will include members of our staff and parents in that process.  As always I will have “Coffee with Dena” on Tuesday morning in Room 26 and I welcome any questions or concerns you may have at that time.

Again, I thank you for the tremendous experience I have had being the principal at Conejo Elementary and of the Open Classroom Leadership Magnet.

Sinceramente,

Dr. Dena Sellers

A Message From Kari Taketa, Our New Principal - Wednesday, June 10, 2015

June 2015

Dear Conejo Elementary Families,

It is with pure excitement that I write to you to introduce myself. My name is Kari Taketa and I will be the new principal at Conejo Elementary starting in the 2015-16 school year.

I have been part of the Conejo School District as a parent, teacher or administrator for the past 20 years. I have a strong background in child development as well as extensive experience working with English Learners. These strengths are a perfect fit for the Open Leadership Magnet and the Neighborhood School here at Conejo Elementary. I was fortunate to work in the preschool field for over eighteen years. This laid the foundation for my core beliefs around student learning. I have one daughter she attended the preschool I worked at. As she got older I went back to school full time. I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree and teaching credential from Cal State University Northridge and Cal State University Channel Islands and began teaching at Park Oaks Elementary.  While teaching at Park Oaks I was fortunate to be part of the development of the parenting group between Conejo Elementary and Park Oaks, Parents Making a Difference (PMAD). As you can see Conejo Elementary has been part of my world for some time now. In 2008, I moved to the District Office as an English Learner Support Teacher. I supported all teachers K-12, who had English Learners (ELs) in their classes, by sharing teaching strategies and showing them how to utilize the ELD curriculum most effectively. In 2010, I was selected to be the Coordinator of EL Services at the District Office. This position gave me an even broader look at all the needs of English Learners and their family’s district wide.

My passion for education and student learning has been with me for as long as I can remember. I look forward to jumping in to the Conejo community, asking lots of questions, gathering information, and positively contributing where needed. The logo on our home page says it all “The Leader In Me, Great Happens Here”. I believe that to be true and I look forward to adding to its greatness!

Please know that I am a very open and approachable person and I enjoy being connected to all parts of the school community. I look forward to getting to know all the students and their families as we learn and grow together.

Sincerely,

Kari Taketa
