Outdoor School
What is Outdoor School?

Our 6th Grade Students have an incredible opportunity to experience Outdoor School! This year, the cost for Outdoor School is $200.00. We have arranged a payment plan to help parents spread out the cost over several months. Flyers were handed out at Back To School Night - please return to your child's homeroom teacher.

Each Colina student will participate in one Outdoor School session, either April 2-5 or April 8-11, depending on his or her homeroom.  Homeroom assignments will be determined and announced closer to the sessions.  A parent information meeting will be held on January 23, 2013, at 7 pm in the Colina auditorium.

Students who come to Outdoor School learn about the environment in which they live in by taking "trail classes" led by naturalists who are skilled in the subject they teach. There are no classrooms or desks; students learn about the environment by going out and seeing it first-hand.

Naturalists teach classes by first-hand discovery, discussion, activities, experiments, games, and songs. Trail classes include: Astronomy, Geology, Oceanography, and Zoology.

One of the highlights is the Beach Hike. Students hike down the Arroyo Sequit Canyon to Leo Carillo State Beach where they explore sea caves, tide pools, and watch for dolphins and migrating gray whales.

Students have a chance to relax and have fun during the evening programs. Students watch and perform skits at the campfire and learn about nocturnal animals and astronomy on the Night Hike.
