Walnut Elementary School Teacher Honored as CVUSD’s 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year
Leah Oviedo receives special recognition from Chamber of Commerce, District
In a surprise celebration on Wednesday, May 31st, the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Conejo Valley Unified School District honored Leah Oviedo, a 5th grade teacher at Walnut Elementary, as their selection for Teacher of the Year for 2016-2017.
Leah has been a certificated teacher for CVUSD since 2008, and in that time, has taught at the Kindergarten, 3rd grade and 5th grade levels. She spent several years prior to that working for the district as a Child Care Assistant and a substitute teacher. She was selected as Teacher of the Year because of her dedication to engaging and supporting all students in learning. Leah illustrated that she is able to recognize the diverse needs of learners, exhibit high professional standards, and engage with families and the community.
Leah is a gifted educator who holds high expectations for all students. Similarly, she holds high expectations for herself, exemplified by the fact that she is constantly educating herself on the latest best practices in teaching. She uses what she learns to help support other teachers, especially new teachers at her school, who she helps in the areas of curriculum development, using assessments to guide instruction, and the implementation of new strategies for integrating technology, STEM, and more.
To celebrate Leah’s 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year recognition, members of the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce congratulated her with gifts from their local businesses. Additionally, members from the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce and CVUSD Superintendent, Dr. Ann Bonitatibus presented Leah with a commemorative plaque recognizing her achievement.
Thank you Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce members and congratulations, Leah!
