A Message from the Superintendent: Welcome Back to the New 2019-2020 School Year!
Dear CVUSD Families,
Welcome back to the 2019-2020 school year. We are excited to greet students on August 21st as they return back to the Conejo Valley Unified School District.
We have had a lot of exciting projects reach fruition over the break. On the facilities front, be sure to follow our CVUSD Bond Measure I project to see the progress we made at several school sites over the summer. From an ultra-modern state-of-the art library at Thousand Oaks High School, to new flooring and walls at Thousand Oaks High School’s Innovation Lab, to landscape renovation at Westlake Hills Elementary, as well as new student lockers at Sequoia Middle School, among many other ongoing facilities and technology upgrades that occur year round thanks to Measure I.
Four elementary schools also had their playgrounds upgraded this summer: Walnut, Aspen, Maple and Ladera Stars Academy. The schools have new swings, slides and bridges, with a beautiful shaded new playground at Walnut, three new playgrounds at Aspen, a brand new all-inclusive playground at Maple, and a Nature’s Acres playground at Ladera Stars Academy. Our playgrounds also go through meticulous safety inspections before they are released for play use. Surface heights are double-checked, textures are finished, and fall clearances and rubber bounce deflection are all tested, to name only a small fraction of our extensive safety checklist.
In preparation for the new school year, teachers and staff have continued their ongoing professional development over the summer, attending conferences and enrichment activities, and investing in their learning to offer students the best possible outcomes in the new academic year. CVUSD has also hosted multiple back to school events across all of our school sites, including WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) events, a 6th grade program designed to both welcome and support students starting middle school by assigning them an 8th grade mentor to guide them during their first year. Our high schools also held orientations this summer for incoming students to experience a day of fun and to get to tour their new school and make friends.
Our volunteers and PTA members continue to work tirelessly on behalf of our schools and students, and we are eternally grateful for their support. If you are interested in joining our community of volunteers, please visit the District website at http://www.conejousd.org/ where there is an opportunity for every parent who wants to get involved. You can also download the CVUSD app here to stay informed on all the latest CVUSD news and updates.
We look forward to working with you throughout the 2019-2020 academic year to ensure the success of all of our students. Best wishes for an outstanding school year!
Mark W. McLaughlin, Ed.D.
