Congratulations Sandra Martinez-Galvan of Thousand Oaks High – CVUSD’s April Teacher of the Month!

Sandra Martinez-Galvan is an engaging, creative, and dedicated educator. She possesses a growth mindset that has proven contagious to her students, colleagues, and everyone she encounters.

A Foreign Language teacher at Thousand Oaks High School, Ms. Martinez-Galvan has been an educator in CVUSD classrooms for 15 years, and an invaluable asset to CVUSD students for more than 22 years. She enhances students’ language acquisition with authentic, and relevant content, and by encouraging students to learn about their culture, and the culture of others. Her goal is to teach students to value education, and to teach them how to succeed in their academic endeavors.

Ms. Martinez-Galvan truly brings the outside world into the classroom to help expand students’ knowledge and awareness. For example, she frequently invites guest speakers to club meetings, classes, and the English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) meetings. The guest speakers share their success stories, and advice, and educate the students about issues that affect them. She also takes students on university field trips.

At Thousand Oaks High School, Ms. Martinez-Galvan leads the Latino Connection Club, the Dreamers Club, and is now starting a leadership program geared towards training Latino students to become leaders in school and the community.

The last two years she has secured a grant to provide free SAT preparation classes to Latino students. The grant provides the funds for two trained teachers to impart on students the skills that will help them succeed on both sections of the test.

As a colleague, Ms. Martinez-Galvan is a team player, and natural problem-solver. She spearheaded a new assessment process to help ensure native Spanish speakers are placed in the correct Spanish class, thus allowing students to be properly challenged, while simultaneously allowing teachers to effectively teach at the prescribed level.

She is a phenomenal leader, and has been an invaluable resource to families by working to ensure that parents are involved in their children’s education. She leads a group of Latino parents who are learning how to help their students succeed in school. She also helps organize the ELAC events where parents are informed and educated.

Outside of the classroom, she is a well-known and loved community figure. She recently won the Cesar Chavez Award for being an essential asset in the Latino Community.
